Thread: Do men need IVF/assisted reproductive services covered on private health insurance?

  1. Do men need IVF/assisted reproductive services covered on private health insurance?

Do men need to have IVF/assisted reproductive services covered on their private health insurance? Or only the women?

Initially when we first signed up for health insurance, I signed up for the top cover and my husband has the next one down as we didnt think it was necessary for him to be paying for top cover including pregnancy/IVF coverage as obviously I would be the one needing pregnancy cover as im the one admitted to hospital.

Im just thinking if we need IVF down the track, does my husband need IVF/assisted reproductive services listed on his health insurance? For the actual IVF procedures? I have no idea how it all works. Not sure if we should upgrade his health insurance so he is covered for reproductive services or as long as the girl is covered is that all thats needed?

    Thanks!

Nope. The only parts you can use your private health insurance for are the egg pick up in hospital and the egg transfer in hospital. Both procedures that are for the woman and claim able on the women's insurance. Sperm analysis, blood tests, appointments with a specialist etc are not covered by PHI, but you can get some back on Medicare.
